The Region of Ice

Official Synopsis sourced from Wiki Grayskull and Wikipedia (CC BY-SA). Composed for heman.org 2026-05-18 Synopsis

The Royal Family, accompanied by Teela and Man-At-Arms are skiing while enjoying a snowy vacation in the Region of Ice. Suddenly, Queen Marlena disappears. One by one, the others also fall into traps in the ground. Prince Adam is the last to go, leaving only Orko above ground. He locates a trap door and slips inside. Underground, a giant Ice Spider named Slush has frozen each member of the Royal party in blocks of ice. Orko overhears the Ice Lord, who wants to use the prisoners as bait to lure He-Man to him. Realizing that Ice Lord has already captured He-Man's alter ego, and that Ice Lord does not know what He-Man looks like, Orko turns his magic wand into a sword replica and pretends to be He-Man.

Ice Lord is skeptical about Orko and pits him against Slush to test his strength. Orko shoots fire balls from his wand/sword, which richochet around the ice cave, causing a rockslide. Slush freezes Orko in a block of ice like the others, but one of the balls of fire hits the block and frees Orko. Ice Lord is impressed with "He-Man"s might, and explains that he doesn't want to opose him, but is forced to act this way. Skeletor has taken his daughter, Snowflake, who is being held against her will at Snake Mountain. For her return, the Ice Lord was told to hand over the Royal family. But if "He-Man" can rescue Snowflake, the Ice Lord will let the Royals go. Orko insists that Ice Lord frees one of his prisoners as a token of good trust and chooses Adam, describing him as his "assistant". Having overheard the conversation while frozen, Adam thanks "He-Man" for rescuing him as soon as he is defrosted.

Back outside, Orko proposes that Adam turns into He-Man and rescues his family. But Adam aims to keep Orko/He-Man's promise and rescue Snowflake first. He transforms, and they travel to Snake Mountain by Wind Raider. He-Man says they'll approach by foot, and enter through the mouth of the snake. There, Trap Jaw is on guard, expecting the Ice Lord and his prisoners. Skeletor is annoyed that he can't monitor the Ice Lord, as the reception from the Ice Mountains is all snowy. He sends Beast Man back to guard Snowflake in her cage. Snowflake, uses her ice powers to have snow fall on Beast Man's head, and makes him slip on a small patch of ice. Beat Man threatens to turn up the heat around her cage.

Orko distracts Trap Jaw with a piece of rope from his hat, and quickly ties Trap Jaws' arms. He-Man grabs a long pole, which Trap Jaw tries to bite. But he soon ends up dangling from the mouth of the snake with only the pole and the rope attached to it to keep him from falling. Skeletor visits his prisoner and wants her to persuade her father to hurry up. After Skeletor and Beast Man leave to go turn up the heat, He-Man and Orko slip into the cel and free Snowflake. They find Beast Man warming up a large cauldron of water. Startled, Beast Man causes the pot to empty all over him. Snowflake freezes the water. Beast Man picks up the empty cauldron and throws it at He-Man. He-Man throws it right back, covering Beat Man and crushes the side to make it form fit the evil henchman. They then head for the exit.

Beast Man manages to return to Skeletor's throne room and informs him about He-Man's presence. Skeletor pulls a lever to make the stone snake on top of Snake Mountain come alive and close it's mouth. Trap Jaw has managed to climb up into the mouth just before the snake closes it. With Skeletor and Beast man behind them, He-Man picks up Trap Jaw (who's arms are still tied) and asks Snowflake to freeze the ground beneath Skeletor and Beast Man's feet. They begin to slip as He-Man throws Trap Jaw at them. The Evil Warriors are knocked down into a heap, and Beast Man thinks he's caught a cold. He-Man pries open the mouth of the snake and they escape.

Back underground in the Region of Ice, the Royal family has been released by Ice Lord, who appologises to them for his actions. King Randor tells him to just ask for help next time. He-Man has already transformed back into Adam, so Snowflake tells Orko to thank He-Man from her, and rewards his heroic actions with a kiss.

Morals by He-Man closing message, original Filmation broadcast

**Man-At-Arms:** : "Orko certainly helped us out in today's adventure. And he learned a good lesson, too. He made a promise to the Ice Lord he thought he could break. But Adam showed him you shouldn't make a promise knowing you're not going to keep it. People judge you by many things: your appearance, your honesty, the way you act. Those things show your character. When you make a promise and don't keep it, it shows bad character. So, always think before you speak and mean what you say. That way what you say will be respected. See you again soon."

Notes of Interest

  1. Behind the scenes: Script was approved April 20, 1983 and final script revision took place April 21, 1983. The Ice Lord and his daughter Snow Flake were described in the script as having blue skin.
  2. Continuity: When He-Man and Orko travel to Snake Mountain by Wind Raider, the background transitions from the light side of Eternia to the dark side where Skeletor resides. The design for the creature Slush would be seen as another Ice Spider in Battle of the Dragons. The animation of Trap Jaw snapping his jaw would be reused in The Great Books Mystery. The Ice Spider design for the creature Slush will be seen again as Hordak's 'pet' in the She-Ra: Princess of Power episode Friendship and as a giant spider that attacks Flutterina in A Lesson in Love.
  3. Animation errors and goofs: When Prince Adam laughs heartily at the very beginning, he does so in the voice of He-Man. As Snowflake escapes from the 'mouth' of Snake Mountain, she appears to be walking on air for a few frames. Teela puts both hands to her mouth, but the background space between her right hand and her face is given a flesh color, making it look like she has six fingers on that hand.

A high-stakes adventure script using a frozen-mountain magical-engine premise. Skeletor’s defeat is delivered through environmental hazard as much as direct combat, an unusual structural choice for the Filmation run.
