Cringer and Battle Cat are one tiger
There is only one animal. Cringer is what he is most of the time: green, orange striped, roughly the size of a large tiger, and reluctant to leave a warm spot on the floor. Battle Cat is what he becomes when Prince Adam transforms into He-Man and turns the Sword of Power on him. The transformed version is bigger, armoured, and fearless.
The pairing is a deliberate mirror of Adam and He-Man. Adam is idle and useless in public so that nobody suspects him; Cringer is a coward for the same structural reason. Both drop the act at the same moment, in the same scene, by the same mechanism. Neither can do it alone, and Cringer cannot trigger the change himself.
Where the two names actually came from
This part is commonly told wrong, including in earlier versions of this page.
Battle Cat came first. In the 1982 Mattel toy line and in the earliest Donald F. Glut minicomics there is no Cringer at all. Battle Cat is simply a wild tiger who lives in the jungle and comes when He-Man calls him. There is no dual identity, no Prince Adam and no transformation.
The Cringer alter ego, and the ability to speak, were introduced in the DC Comics series that began in 1982, written by Paul Kupperberg, starting with “From Eternia, With Death!”. That is a year before Filmation went to air. What the Filmation cartoon added was the sword-beam transformation sequence and the running comic relationship between Adam and his frightened pet, which is what fixed the character in most people’s memories.
Does he talk?
Yes, in the series most people remember, and this varies more than you would expect:
- Filmation, 1983. Talks throughout. Alan Oppenheimer voiced Cringer’s nervous mumbling and Battle Cat’s gruffer register.
- 200x, 2002. Does not speak. Cringer makes house-cat noises and Battle Cat roars, using real big-cat recordings. There is no credited voice performer for the character.
- Netflix CGI, 2021. Talks. David Kaye voices both forms.
- Revelation and Revolution. Talks. Stephen Root voices both forms.
The origin episode
Filmation gave the character a proper origin in the 1985 episode “Battlecat”. A young Adam rescues a green tiger cub from a sabrecat. Teela and the other children mock the cub for being frightened and call him a cringer, and the name sticks. Years later, after Cringer accidentally sees Adam transform, He-Man points the sword at him and Battle Cat exists for the first time.
First appearance
Both forms appear in “Diamond Ray of Disappearance”, which aired on 5 September 1983 as the first episode of the Filmation series. It is worth noting that this episode is often labelled S01E04, because it was fourth in production order. It was written to be the audience’s introduction and it was broadcast first.

Cringer appears in the 2026 live-action film.
Nicholas Galitzine confirmed in press interviews that Cringer is a talking green tiger in the film. Mattel's tie-in products and a CinemaCon standee both show an armoured Battle Cat, and a promo video showed He-Man riding him, but the film handles the relationship differently from the cartoon and we are not asserting an on-screen transformation here. Reviewers singled out Cringer's CGI as some of the film's weakest effects work.

Why is Cringer green?
Because of a toy budget problem, not a story decision. Mattel reused an unarticulated tiger body from its 1976 Big Jim line rather than tool a new mount. Artist Tony Guerrero reportedly painted the reused tiger green to make the idea look unappealing, and marketing approved the green anyway.
How does Cringer turn into Battle Cat?
Prince Adam raises the Sword of Power and becomes He-Man, then points the sword at Cringer and channels part of that power into him. Cringer cannot do it himself. He becomes much larger, gains an armoured helmet and saddle, and loses his timidity.
Does Cringer know that Prince Adam is He-Man?
Yes, and he is one of only a handful who do. The opening narration introduces him in his own line as Adam's fearless friend, which is the joke, since he is nothing of the kind. Its separate count of "only three others" lists the Sorceress, Man-At-Arms and Orko and does not include him, but Cringer is present at every transformation and the origin episode turns on him witnessing one.
What is Skeletor's cat called?
Panthor, a giant purple panther. The vintage Panthor toy is the same mould as Battle Cat, covered in flocking to give it a fur texture, and it shipped with a dark green saddle but no helmet.
