He-Man is the Most Powerful Man in the Universe and the alter ego of Prince Adam of Eternia. He has had at least four separate published origins, and Mattel wrote six different cardback bios for him without reconciling them.
Four origins, all official
Most characters get one origin and a set of retellings. He-Man got four origins, and every one of them was published by or under licence from Mattel.
The first is the 1982 DC mini-comics by Donald F. Glut, packed in with the earliest figures. There He-Man is an Eternian barbarian with no civilian identity at all. An early incarnation of the Sorceress arms him, he carries one half of the Power Sword, Skeletor carries the other, and the two halves joined together are the key to Castle Grayskull.
The second is the 1983 Filmation series, which threw that out. He-Man became the secret identity of Prince Adam, son of King Randor and Queen Marlena, and the transformation, the invocation and the cowardly tiger who becomes Battle Cat all arrived at once. This is the version that became canonical, and it is the version almost everyone means when they say He-Man.
The third is the 2002 Mike Young Productions series, which kept Adam but pushed the power backwards in time, tracing it to King Grayskull, an Ancient who wielded the Sword of Power long before Adam was born. He-Man stopped being a chosen individual and became an inheritance.
The fourth is the 2026 live-action film, which removes the secret identity entirely. Adam is raised on Earth in Oklahoma City with no memory of Eternia, invents the name “He-Man” as a ten-year-old, and takes it for real in the epilogue. There is no palace life and nothing to hide.
None of these supersedes the others in Mattel’s own material. They coexist.
What the Classics cardback actually says
Mattel’s Masters of the Universe Classics line ran from 2008 to 2020 and put a bio on the back of every card. He-Man got six of them: the base figure plus Battle Armor, New Adventures, Preternia Disguise, Thunder Punch, and King He-Man. The base card opens:
REAL NAME: Adam of the House of Randor
A direct descendent of the legendary King Grayskull, Prince Adam of Eternia was chosen to protect his ancestor’s Power Sword from evil.
The rest of that paragraph welds three separate continuities into a single sentence. Adam fights evil with a techno vest and a built-in force field, then learns to combine both halves of the Power Sword and channel the energy of the Elders to become He-Man. That is the 2002 descent from King Grayskull, the 1982 two-halves sword and the Filmation Adam identity, all at once. The techno vest is a stage Filmation never had: a period in which Adam fought evil before he could transform at all.
The transcription we hold also spells “descendent” with an e, runs “along side” as two words, and ends without a full stop. No He-Man card back has been photographed, so treat those readings as probable rather than certain, and do not present them as Mattel’s own typos.
The variant cards add the parts the base card leaves out
The Preternia Disguise card sends He-Man backwards in time. The Sorceress uses the Central Tower and the Cosmic Key to disguise him and dispatch him to Preternia, where he fights alongside his own ancestor King Grayskull and the wizard-warrior He-Ro, turns the tide of the first Ultimate Battleground, and learns the secret to defeating the Snake Men. The disguise exists because he “cannot reveal his true identity to his own ancestor”.
The Thunder Punch card is the darkest thing Mattel ever printed on a He-Man card. Skeletor banishes King Randor to Despondos, then uses Faker to convince the royal court that He-Man is a Gar and that he killed the King. Eternia turns on him. The Masters become renegades in their own country, retreat to the underground caves of Tundoria, and return as an underground strike squad to find Skeletor, King Hssss and Hordak all fighting each other for the throne.
The New Adventures card resolves the dual identity by ending it: “Adam forsook his alternate identity, becoming He-Man permanently.”
The King He-Man card jumps to the end of the whole timeline. He-Man defeats Skeletor in single combat on the Jaw Bridge of the Temple of Power on Trolla, returns home to find Randor dead, takes the throne, marries Teela, and has a son named Dare who becomes “the new He-or”. That last word is how the transcription we hold reads it. It has not been checked against a photograph of the card, so treat the spelling as unconfirmed.

Nicholas Galitzine plays both Prince Adam and He-Man in the 2026 live-action film.
Artie Wilkinson-Hunt plays the young Adam in the prologue. The film makes three changes bigger than the casting: Adam grows up on Earth so there is no secret to protect, the Cringer to Battle Cat transformation is dropped and Battle Cat held for the final shot, and He-Man kills, which Filmation's standards would never have allowed. Dolph Lundgren, He-Man in the 1987 Cannon film, cameos as a gym-goer credited as "Macho Man" and leaves on "Good journey".

What is He-Man's real name?
Adam. Mattel's Classics cardbacks give it as "Adam of the House of Randor" on all six He-Man cards, though Mattel's own King Randor card gives the family as the House of Miro.
Is He-Man Prince Adam?
In every continuity from 1983 onwards, yes. In the 1982 DC mini-comics that launched the toyline there was no Prince Adam at all; He-Man was a barbarian with no civilian identity. Filmation created Adam in 1983 to make serialised storytelling possible.
Who knows that Adam is He-Man?
In the Filmation series: Man-At-Arms, Orko, the Sorceress and Cringer. The She-Ra continuity widened it to Adora, Light Hope, Madame Razz and a few Etherian allies. In the 2026 film the question does not arise, because Adam has no identity to protect.
Does He-Man kill?
Not in the Filmation series, where the standards of the time meant he disarmed, restrained or talked enemies down. The 2026 film reverses this: He-Man kills, and the film treats it as something he has to learn from.
