The Sorceress of Castle Grayskull

The Sorceress is the guardian of Castle Grayskull and the person who made Prince Adam into He-Man. Mattel's own name for her is Teela'Na, and she is Teela's biological mother.

The one who says yes

He-Man’s origin has a gatekeeper. Somebody had to decide Prince Adam was the right heir, hand him the sword and grant the transformation, and in every version of the story that somebody is the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull. She is not a sidekick who happens to have magic. She is the office that authorises the hero.

Filmation kept her mostly seated. Across the 1983 to 1985 run, voiced by Linda Gary in 63 of 130 episodes on our own count, she is generally inside the castle, speaking to He-Man, Man-At-Arms and Teela by magical contact rather than travelling to them. When she does leave, she leaves as a falcon, named Zoar in some continuities. Erika Scheimer voiced her occasionally in the same run.

Filmation also gave her no name. That is the gap Mattel spent the Classics line filling, and it filled it twice, in two different shapes.

Teela’Na, the person

The base Masters of the Universe Classics cardback treats the Sorceress as an individual with a life, and starts her a long way from the castle:

REAL NAME: Teela’Na

Growing up in a small Eternian village, Teela’na helped defend her people from a Horde Scout ship that had discovered her planet on a magic locating mission.

From there the card has the sitting Sorceress choose her for her loyalty, courage and wisdom, and hand on the title. Then it does two things that reach across the whole catalogue. It says that during her reign Teela’na cast the spell that cloned the Sword of He, and that she was herself cloned by Skeletor, who wanted “a magic wielding bride” to pass on his legacy. With Man-At-Arms she saved the cloned child, and then gave the baby to him to raise, waiting for the day her daughter would take the castle.

The first of those is Teela. This is where Mattel states that Teela is a clone of the Sorceress, rescued and handed to Man-At-Arms. Teela’s own Classics card confirms it from her side, calling her “the adoptive daughter of Duncan” who “has yet to become aware of her true heritage as the magically cloned daughter of, and heir to, the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull”. Two cards, no conflict. The Sorceress is not a mother figure to Teela. She is Teela’s mother, and gave her away.

The second is the sword. The spell that cloned the Sword of He connects directly to Adora’s cardback, which says the Sorceress recognised the prophesied twins and “magically cloned the Sword of He, enhancing it with the Stone of Protection so that each twin could have a key to unlock the Power”. She-Ra’s sword exists because the Sorceress made it. That is one decision, taken by one person, that produces both hero identities in the franchise.

The Battleground Teela card is where the succession actually lands: the Sorceress, “after being wounded by King Hssss’ venom”, knows her time is short, takes Teela to the Elders’ training citadel in the Polar Ice Cap, reveals her heritage, trains her “until the venom overtook her”, and Teela returns to Grayskull as the new guardian. Mattel killed her off on a cardback, and did it in a sentence.

The Temple of Darkness card, and the office

The variant card is not a retelling of the same events. It describes something different: an institution. Grayskull’s Elders, it says, transfused the Power of the Universe out of the Sword of He and into a giant orb hidden in the abyss below Castle Grayskull, after a secret bargain with the Trolla. And then:

REAL NAME: Teela’Na

There, Grayskull’s widow took up the lonely duty of Sorceress, guarding the castle to prevent the power from falling into the wrong hands.

The card carries that line forward for five millennia of her students while the castle fades from memory into legend, and only at the end of the Great Unrest does a new Sorceress named Teela’na arrive, helping the remaining Elders tap Eternia’s magical secrets with the orb to create the unified force that gets named the Power of Grayskull.

So on this card the first Sorceress is King Grayskull’s widow, and Teela’Na arrives five thousand years and an unbroken line of students later. The base card says only that the current Sorceress chose Teela’na and leaves the depth of the line unstated. Neither card contradicts the other on facts, but they answer different questions, and readers who have only met one of them come away with a different idea of what the Sorceress is: a woman with a title, or the current holder of a five-millennium post.

Both together also explain the Filmation version’s strange stillness. If the job is guarding an orb in an abyss, sitting in the castle is the job.

Grayskull, and what she is guarding

The Castle Grayskull card supplies the object: King Grayskull ordered the fortress built to safeguard the sword’s power source, constructed with the help of giants from a single enchanted stone sculpted into a Power Skull, with towers and walls added later and the whole thing protected by the magic of the Elders. Mattel’s own card title for the castle reads “Fortess of Mystery & Power” in the transcription we hold. No Castle Grayskull card back has been photographed, so treat the misspelling as probable and not certain rather than asserting Mattel printed it.

The Goddess card fills the interval: after King Grayskull’s death the Council of Elders split the Sword of He in two, and for five thousand years a spirit guide known as the Goddess trained secret guardians to keep the halves apart, “many of these brave warriors” taking the name He-Man. Read alongside the Temple of Darkness card, the picture is two parallel five-thousand-year custodial lines, one guarding the power and one guarding the sword, converging on Adam.

One Mattel oddity worth noting once, since it appears in the Teela card quoted above: the Snake Men leader is spelled “King Hssss” there, “Hsssss, King” as his own entry heading, and “King Hisss” elsewhere in the same line. All the spellings are official.

Revelation and the modern voices

The Revelation continuation passes the role to Teela briefly and then returns it, and spends real time on what holding it costs the holder. Susan Eisenberg voices her there. Nicole Oliver voiced her in the 2002 to 2005 series; Kimberly Brooks in the 2021 Netflix animated series.

Morena Baccarin plays the Sorceress in the 2026 live-action Masters of the Universe.

The part is structurally load-bearing rather than decorative: she opens the portal that sends the infant Adam to Earth, which is the premise the entire film rests on.
