Shadow Weaver

Shadow Weaver is the Evil Horde's sorceress and Hordak's chief magical lieutenant, and she raised Adora. Mattel's own name for her is Beatrix, once known on Etheria as Light Spinner.

The face you never see

Shadow Weaver is a design solution before she is a character. Filmation gave her a hood that never comes off, a red and black silhouette, and two glowing eyes where a face should be, and then never resolved it. In the 1985 to 1987 She-Ra: Princess of Power run, voiced by Linda Gary, the face stays in shadow. That is not a withheld reveal, it is the point of the drawing.

What the series does resolve is her relationship to the hero. She is not simply a Horde officer. She is the person who raised Adora during the years the Horde held her, which is why Adora’s defection is written as a betrayal of a household rather than a change of allegiance. Our episode data has her across 52 episodes of that run, from “Into Etheria” onward.

Beatrix of Mystacor

Mattel’s Masters of the Universe Classics cardback is the document that turns her from a silhouette into a person, and it does considerably more work than most people credit it with. It opens:

REAL NAME: Beatrix

Born in the Etherian Kingdom of Mystacor, Beatrix was once known as Light Spinner and served as an apprentice to the great mage, Norwyn.

The rest of the card runs her whole fall in five sentences. Hordak arrives on Etheria during his exile in Despondos and promises her great power in return for information and help in overthrowing Bright Moon and the surrounding kingdoms. A magical gem greatly enhances her powers and also induces “an irreversible change in her appearance and mental state”. She betrays Norwyn and her fellow magical student Castaspella, leading Horde Troopers to their hidden magic archives. In Horror Hall she takes the name Shadow Weaver and turns her black magic on the Great Rebellion, all the while “secretly planning to overthrow Hordak and claim his power for her own”.

Four things in that are worth pulling out, and the first is the one almost everyone gets wrong.

Light Spinner is Mattel’s, not Netflix’s. The 2018 She-Ra and the Princesses of Power reboot is widely credited with inventing the Light Spinner identity, including in the copy currently on our own live page. It is on the Classics cardback. The reboot took a name Mattel had already published and built a character arc around it. That is a different and more interesting story than “the reboot invented her past”, and it is exactly the kind of thing a wiki flattens.

The disfigurement is the price, not the cause. The card says the gem enhanced her powers and induced an irreversible change in her appearance and mental state. The hood is not concealing a monster she always was. It is concealing what the bargain did.

She has a named teacher and a named victim. Norwyn, the great mage she apprenticed under, and Castaspella, her fellow student. Castaspella’s own Classics card describes her as a leader in the Great Rebellion and one of Etheria’s most powerful mages, and does not mention the betrayal, so the two cards meet without contradicting each other. The archives raid is Shadow Weaver’s account of her own worst act.

She is planning to overthrow her boss. The closing clause puts her in the same structural position as Evil-Lyn on the Eternian side: serving a master she intends to replace. Mattel wrote both of its major sorceresses as internal threats to the villains they work for, and never once let either of them succeed on a cardback.

The escape from Etheria, and the contradiction it creates

Shadow Weaver’s card stops at Horror Hall. Hordak’s does not, and this is where she becomes load-bearing for the whole Classics timeline.

The Filmation Hordak cardback says he lost his grip on Etheria and “eventually gave it up completely when Shadow Weaver discovered a Laser Gate portal back to Eternia”. On that card, Shadow Weaver is the reason the Horde returns to Eternia at all. She ends the exile.

That is not what Mattel says elsewhere. Hordak’s base card credits his release to Keldor, as payment for the bargain that turned Keldor into Skeletor. Evil-Lyn’s card claims it herself, as one of “a series of miscalculations”. The Hurricane Hordak card agrees with Evil-Lyn. She-Ra’s card says Hordak simply “found an escape”. Four cards, four accounts, and Shadow Weaver’s Laser Gate is one of them.

We are not going to resolve that, and neither has Mattel. What we can say is which card says which, and that Shadow Weaver’s claim is the only one that requires no bargain and no accident: on the Filmation Hordak card she just does the work and finds the door.

One Mattel spelling note in passing, since it recurs across the cards quoted here: the Snake Men leader appears as “King Hssss”, “Hsssss, King” and “King Hisss” on different cards in the same line. All are official.

Lorraine Toussaint and the 2018 reboot

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power made her the most morally complicated figure on the show and cast Lorraine Toussaint, whose performance is the one most often singled out from that series. The reboot’s version leans on the mentor-and-ward relationship with Adora that Filmation had established and the Classics card had explained, and pushes it into open manipulation.

Shadow Weaver does not appear in the 2026 live-action Masters of the Universe film.

She is not in the billed cast and no appearance has been confirmed.
