Hordak

Hordak is the leader of the Evil Horde, the conqueror of Etheria, and the man who made Skeletor. Mattel's own name for him is Hec-Tor Kur, second-born heir to the Horde Empire.

The one villain Skeletor answers to

Every other Evil Warrior is a problem for He-Man. Hordak is a problem for Skeletor. That is the structural point of the character, and it has held across forty years and five continuities: the moment Hordak is on screen, the villain the show has spent its whole run building becomes somebody’s apprentice.

Filmation put him in place with He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword in 1985, where he is the captor of the infant Adora, the architect of Etheria’s subjugation, and Skeletor’s former master. George DiCenzo voiced him there. That 1985 crossover film is his first Filmation appearance: he is in none of the 1983 to 1985 He-Man run that precedes it.

His body is the other constant. Across continuities he is drawn as part organic and part machine: a chest that opens to house the bat Imp, arms that detach and reform as weapons, and the ability to morph parts of himself into ranged weapons and vehicles.

Hec-Tor Kur and the Horde Empire

Mattel’s Masters of the Universe Classics line gave him a real name and a family, and the family is the interesting part. His cardback opens:

REAL NAME: Hec-Tor Kur

Second born heir to the Horde Empire, Hec-Tor Kur arrived on the planet Eternia while battling the cosmic warrior He-Ro.

The rest of that card has him take the name Hordak, raise an army, challenge the Snake Men for the planet, defeat their king, and then lose to Grayskull, who banishes him to the dimension of Despondos. Centuries later, it says, he makes contact with a young alchemist named Keldor and begins teaching him the dark arts “in exchange for freedom from his extra-dimensional prison”.

The Horde Empire card fills in what “second born heir” means. An emperor named Seferus Kur founded the Horde Empire; his sons used black spells to assassinate him; the eldest, Anillis, took the throne and renamed himself Horde Prime. To secure his rule, Horde Prime “sent his scheming younger brother roar away on a foolish crusade of revenge”. “Roar away” is what the transcription we hold reads. No photograph of that card back has been located, so we cannot yet say whether the oddity is Mattel’s or the transcriber’s. Treat it as probable and not certain, and do not publish it as a printed Mattel error until a card is photographed.

So Hordak’s entire career is a sibling exile dressed up as a mission. His brother sent him after He-Ro to get rid of him, and the Horde Prime card says outright that in doing so Anillis “set about a destined series of events that five millennia later would lead to his defeat at the hands of the twin warriors He-Man and She-Ra”.

A note on the Snake Men leader’s name, once, because it appears in Hordak’s own text. Mattel spells him “King Hssss” here, heads his own entry “Hsssss, King”, and uses “King Hisss” elsewhere in the same line. All of it is official; none of it is consistent.

Who freed Hordak from Despondos: four official answers

This is the best example we have of Mattel contradicting itself, and it is worth laying out cold. Four Classics cardbacks describe the end of Hordak’s inter-dimensional banishment. They give four different mechanisms.

Answer one: Keldor did, as the price of his own life. Hordak’s own card says he contacted Keldor and taught him the dark arts “in exchange for freedom from his extra-dimensional prison”. The Spirit of Hordak card is explicit that this was a bargain: Hordak “in return for Keldor’s promise to release him from Despondos, saved Keldor’s life by merging him with a powerful demon”. The Keldor card tells the same trade from Keldor’s side.

Answer two: Evil-Lyn did, by accident. Evil-Lyn’s card says that “in a series of miscalculations, she helped release both King Hssss and Hordak from their inter-dimensional prisons”. The Hurricane Hordak card confirms it from Hordak’s side and opens on it: “After being released from exile in Despondos by Evil-Lyn, Hordak returned to Eternia with his ageless army”. The Battleground Evil-Lyn card escalates the same claim to three prisoners, saying she freed “the Snake Men, Hordak, and Gygor, increasing her adversaries threefold”.

Answer three: Shadow Weaver did, via a portal. The Filmation Hordak card has him ruling Etheria for millennia and losing his grip, and says he “eventually gave it up completely when Shadow Weaver discovered a Laser Gate portal back to Eternia”.

Answer four: he found his own way out. She-Ra’s card simply says “when Hordak found an escape to Eternia, she followed him”. No agent, no bargain, no rescuer.

None of these is a variant reading of the others. A prisoner is either released by his pupil as payment, released by a rival witch by mistake, walked out through a portal his own lieutenant found, or got out himself. Mattel wrote these across roughly a decade of releases without a continuity bible, and the honest position is that Hordak’s escape is the single most contested event in the Classics canon rather than a settled one.

Etheria, and why he is blue

The Filmation Hordak card is the one that explains the look. It has Horde scouts locating a small magical planet deep inside Despondos after millennia of wandering, and Hordak leading his troops there and overthrowing the local monarchs to claim it as a new Horde home world. Then:

Exposed to the planet’s natural magic, Hordak’s blood rose to the surface, giving him a bluish skin hue.

The Etheria card supplies the other half: Etheria was a being of formless light sent by the Overlords of Trolla to bring hope into Despondos, and it turned the planet into a paradise “until Hordak discovered it during his banishment”. He is not a native conqueror. He is a castaway who found the only nice thing in a dark dimension and took it.

That card also contains one of the cleanest bits of misdirection in the line, in the phrase “After his stepdaughter’s betrayal”. Catra’s card uses the same framing: she was promoted to Force Captain “after Hordak’s step-daughter betrayed the Horde to the Etherian Rebellion”. Neither card names Adora. Mattel is writing around her.

Revelation, Revolution and Horde Prime

The Netflix Revelation continuation expanded his role substantially, and Revolution promotes him to the primary threat once Skeletor’s arcs conclude. Keith David voices him in Revolution.

Hordak should not be confused with Horde Prime, who in Mattel’s Classics canon is his older brother Anillis Kur, and who in the 2018 Netflix She-Ra reboot is a separate and greater figure of whom Hordak is a clone. Keston John voices Horde Prime in that series.

Hordak does not appear in the 2026 live-action Masters of the Universe film.

He is not in the billed cast and no appearance has been confirmed. Coverage speculating about a Horde-led sequel is speculation, not confirmation.
