The Dark Horse 2023 launch is the moment Mattel pulled the MOTU comics license out of DC and back into the hands of a creator-driven imprint. DC had held the license since 2012 and had run through several editorial regimes; the property had been sitting fallow for two years when Dark Horse announced in late 2022 that it was taking over with a multi-series strategy.

Forge of Destiny came first, a four-issue miniseries set in the Masterverse continuity bridge between Revelation and the next animated production. Tony Fleecs handled the lead covers with a pencil-tight, more illustration-focused approach than the DC era had been carrying. The colour palette leaned toward bronzes and oranges, a clear visual departure from the DC books’ blue-heavy night palette. Fleecs paired with interior artist Tim Seeley to lock down a house style that the rest of the line would follow.

Masterverse, the second 2023 launch, expanded the palette and the cast. The covers brought in Mateus Manhanini and Cully Hamner for variants, and the lead covers introduced a new approach to He-Man that emphasized the warrior-king persona of the Masterverse continuity over the playful He-Man of the Filmation cartoon. The shoulders are wider. The sword is heavier. The colour-script across the four issues moves from steel grey to sunset orange across the arc.

The relaunched He-Man and the Masters of the Universe ongoing, kicking off in 2025, brought Dan Mora and Walt Simonson onto variants. The cover designs are denser, more illustrated, more aware of the long history of the property. Mora’s main covers explicitly cite Alcala in their composition while updating the rendering to a modern digital workflow.

For collectors, the 2023 launch covers are still on the secondary market at cover price. The Fleecs Forge of Destiny issue 1, the Masterverse issue 1, and the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe 2025 issue 1 are the three keys. All three saw print-run undershoot, with Forge of Destiny going to second print within ten days of release. Variant covers from Frank Cho, Dan Hipp, and Peach Momoko have been added to the relaunch lineup.
