The Aladdin Industries metal lunchbox is a foundational piece of vintage MOTU merchandise. Released for the 1983 back-to-school retail window, just as the first wave of Mattel action figures was hitting peak distribution, the lunchbox bundled the new property with a category of school accessory that nearly every elementary school child in the United States was already buying every August.
Construction is the classic Aladdin metal-on-steel format. Painted lithograph artwork wraps around all six sides. The front shows Castle Grayskull silhouetted against an Eternian red sky with He-Man in mid-stride toward the viewer, sword raised. The back panel shows a Skeletor confrontation scene with the Havoc Staff held aloft. The two side panels carry secondary scenes: Teela in her snake-armor pose on the left, Battle Cat with He-Man mounted on the right. The lid shows a sweeping panorama of Eternia with both heroes and villains in motion. The bottom is a flat MOTU logo.
The matching Thermos brand vacuum bottle (cataloged separately as the 1984 MOTU Thermos) shipped as a paired option through department stores. Sears, JCPenney, Kmart, Woolworth’s, and the Aladdin direct mail catalog all carried the pair as a back-to-school combo for around $7.99 in 1983 dollars.
Production ran through the 1983 to 1984 school year. By 1985, Aladdin had switched its MOTU lunchbox line to softer plastic construction, leaving the 1983 to 1984 metal version as a discrete collectible era. The metal lunchboxes shipped in a corrugated outer box that almost no collector retained; loose lunchboxes without the original outer carton are the standard secondary-market grade.
Condition issues to watch on the secondary market: paint chipping at the corners, latch failures, handle wear, and rust on the interior bottom corners. Mint examples with no chipping and a working latch run $80 to $150 on eBay. Boxed examples with the original Thermos run $200 to $350. Sealed-new examples have not surfaced since the early 2000s and would command a significant premium.
