The Piece

Masters of the Universe Kang Gi / Webstor Original Concept Artwork by Mark Taylor (Mattel, Undated). Crawling out from the shadowy depths of Mark Taylor's early sketchbook comes Kang Gi, a fierce and primal vision that offers a rare look into the pre-production underworld of Masters of the Universe villainy. This original concept artwork, crafted in mixed media on a 24.75 by 20 inch illustration board with a clear protective overlay and white border, showcases a reptilian warrior in a powerful combat-ready stance. Clad in red and yellow chest armor, arm bracers, shin guards, and a detailed belt with a flowing red drape, the figure wields a spiked mace with confidence. While the menacing facial structure strongly resembles what would become Webstor, this is not a direct ancestor but rather a standalone character pulled from Taylor's earlier fantasy worlds-possibly intended as a henchman for Skeletor, or even for the unrealized Conan line. The creature's design, with its sinewy posture and hybrid beastly traits, stands as a testament to Taylor's blend of the mythic and monstrous, long before official canon was set in stone. The concept piece exhibits toning, scratching, and scuffing, with handling wear along the edges and corners. Additional scuffing is visible along the bottom and center right side, with wrinkling along the lower edge and in the upper corners. Kang Gi is a rare and evocative window into a creative moment where the boundaries between hero and horror, myth and sci-fi, were still being drawn in pencil, one beastly villain at a time.
