The Piece

Masters of the Universe Skeletor (De-Man) Original Concept Artwork by Mark Taylor (Mattel, 1981). Mark Taylor's original artwork for Masters of the Universe Skeletor is a defining piece of the franchise's creative evolution, showcasing the sinister presence that would become one of the most iconic villains in pop culture. Taylor, one of the original designers of MOTU, drew inspiration from a childhood experience at a funhouse attraction, where he encountered what he believed to be a real preserved corpse. This haunting memory directly influenced Skeletor's gaunt, menacing visage, infusing him with an eerie, otherworldly quality that set him apart from traditional fantasy villains. Before settling on the final version, Taylor experimented with multiple iterations, including a concept known as Evil Incarnate or The King of Styx, which bore striking similarities to Skeletor, particularly in the skull-like face and crossbones motif. His early design, sometimes referred to as De-Man, featured distinct elements such as bare feet and shin guards, the shape of which echoed his earlier Torak skeleton warrior concept.

Rendered in mixed media on illustration board measuring 20 by 15 inches, this artwork includes a protective clear overlay and production notes that trace the character's refinement from concept to final form. The iconic villain is depicted with a "mummy-like" face, adorned in his signature purple armor over a light blue skin tone, an eerie contrast that enhances his supernatural presence. He is equipped with his signature Havoc Staff, an imposing weapon topped with a ram's skull, and production notes suggest a possible play feature in which the head of the staff could detach with motion. The design seen in this piece is remarkably close to the Skeletor that was ultimately produced, with only minor simplifications for mass production. A prototype was built based on this very artwork, mirroring the final toy's structure, though the detachable head on the Havoc Staff did not make it into the retail version. The artwork displays handling wear along the edges and corners, with surface tears visible along the right edge and upper corners, significant surface scuffing and slight staining along the right side, and additional wear in the upper left and center left of the image. Some general discoloration is present throughout, though the central composition remains vibrant. Taylor's original art remains highly sought after by collectors, as it represents the raw creative vision that helped shape Masters of the Universe into the legendary franchise it is today.
