Masters of the Universe Multi-Face / Man-E-Faces Original Concept Artwork by Mark Taylor (Mattel, 1982). Emerging from the visionary mind of Mark Taylor, the original Masters of the Universe Multi-Face artwork offers a compelling look at an early incarnation of what would eventually become the fan-favorite Man-E-Faces. Crafted in mixed media on an illustration board with a clear protective overlay and measuring 15.25 by 20 inches with a white border, the piece showcases two distinctive versions of the character. One figure is adorned with a vibrant, multi-colored shawl-an homage to indigenous Mesoamerican warriors who inspired Taylor's design-while the second focuses on the detailed chest armor paired with striking white and gold trunks. Both versions feature golden helmeted heads and are armed with an ornate scepter, reinforcing their status as both mystic and warrior. Along the right side of the board, alternate faces are displayed in a vertical lineup, revealing the character's transformative identity: a monster, a humanoid, and a futuristic sci-fi visage. Each face speaks to a different realm of myth and mystery, a concept that would later be crystallized in the rotating-head gimmick of Man-E-Faces. The artwork is signed and dated by Mark Taylor in the bottom right corner and exhibits toning, scratching, and scuffing, with handling wear along the edges and corners. Additional scuffing is present along the left side and top edge line. This early concept captures the essence of a character not confined to one identity but capable of navigating multiple worlds-barbaric, monstrous, and technological-a perfect symbol of the dimensional storytelling at the heart of Eternia.
