The Piece

Masters of the Universe Man-At-Arms Original Artwork by Mark Taylor (Mattel, 1981). Marching out of the conceptual frontier of science-fantasy, Mark Taylor's original artwork for Masters of the Universe's Man-At-Arms reveals the early evolution of one of Eternia's most battle-hardened defenders. This bold piece, created in mixed media with a protective overlay and measuring 20 by 15 inches overall (with the artwork itself at 17 by 14 inches), captures the tech-clad warrior in all his orange-armored glory. Dressed in a signature green bodysuit and encased in futuristic-medieval gear, Man-At-Arms sports a cybernetic helmet, a lion front cloth, a blade tucked into his left boot, and his unmistakable orange club at the ready. Inspired by the fearlessness of Spanish Conquistadors and laced with tech-driven elements influenced by Sos the Rope and the post-Star Wars tech craze, Taylor's design was part brute force, part salvaged genius-born from a world where ancient technology lies buried, waiting to be unearthed. Originally conceived for the never-produced Rob-N & the Space Hoods toy line, an early version of the character-known as Paladin-carried a similar aesthetic, later repurposed into the legendary Man-At-Arms. The illustration features production notes in the upper right detailing Man At Arms unique items, with additional sketches of the Hypno-Mace and face mask-shield on the upper left. The piece is signed and dated by Mark Taylor in the bottom right corner. The artwork exhibits toning, scratching, and scuffing with handling wear along the edges and corners. There is tape wear along the side edge lines, with fraying and additional scuffing across the bottom. Additionally, there is a surface tear covered with a piece of tape in the upper left edge line, and scratching in the bottom right corner. A foundational relic of MOTU history, this artwork captures the fearless spirit and imaginative force that helped forge an entire universe.
