The Piece

Masters of the Universe Battle Catapult Original Artwork by Mark Taylor (Mattel, 1981). Blazing with the bold creativity that helped define Eternia, the Mark Taylor Heroic Figure Battle Catapult original artwork is a dynamic concept piece from the early days of Masters of the Universe development. This single-pilot armored vehicle, drawn in a striking sea-green with a massive copper-orange catapult, evokes a fusion of medieval warfare and futuristic tech-a hallmark of Taylor's barbarian-meets-sci-fi vision. Measuring 14 by 17 inches, the piece is crafted in mixed media and taped to an illustration board with a 20 by 25-inch backing and a clear protective overlay. It features detailed production notes outlining the catapult's launch and push mechanics. The vehicle itself channels the aesthetic of a mythic war machine, with a bird-like figure-echoing the stance of heraldic griffins-adding a dash of lore. The original artwork is signed and dated by Taylor in the bottom right corner, and exhibits handling wear along the edges and corners, with visible residue and surface wear along the edge lines. There is notable scuffing and scratching near the bottom center, wrinkling in the upper corners, and a small pinhole on the left side. Though intended as a functional accessory, the Battle Catapult artwork captures the raw, imaginative energy of MOTU's foundational worldbuilding-where every vehicle, weapon, and beast played a role in a sprawling mythic saga.
