MATTEL - MOTU ORIGINS

Skell-Ra! The evil crossover we'd always wanted, but didn't expect

Skell-Ra is the strangest thing Mattel has done with Skeletor in years: a crossover figure where the Lord of Destruction is not the villain who wins, he is the vessel who gets used. Two heads, reversible wings, the Sword of Plun-Darr, on the oversized Turtles of Grayskull buck. Now 20 percent off.

Skeletor has been beaten, revived, redesigned, made sympathetic, made a god and made a joke. What he has almost never been is somebody else’s tool.

That is what Mattel’s Masters of the Universe x ThunderCats crossover does to him, and it is the reason Skell-Ra is more interesting than a repaint has any right to be.

  • 5.5 inch Origins scale
  • 16 points of articulation
  • 2 swappable heads
  • Reversible purple / red wings
  • Sword of Plun-Darr
  • 2 character cards
  • SKU JFX01

The two character cards

The figure ships with two cards that fit together into a single image. On most Origins releases that text is flavour. Here it is continuity, and it is the reason this figure is more than a repaint.

SKELETOR, Evil Lord of Destruction! On Third Eternia, Skeletor discovered a new source of power: The Black Pyramids. Within, the Ancient Spirits of Evil offered him unlimited strength; enough to take the Power of Grayskull. In return, he would do their bidding as he ruled the universe.
MUMM-RA, The Ever-Living!The Ancient Spirits of Evil granted the demon-priest Mumm-Ra the power to rule Third Earth. After Mumm-Ra's defeat at the hands of the ThunderCats, the Ancient Spirits of Evil searched across the universe for a new vessel who would trade power for servitude.

Put them side by side and Skeletor’s card reads differently. He does not conquer anything here. He takes a deal, from entities that had already run this exact arrangement on another world, with another host, and discarded him when he lost.

Skeletor has spent forty years being told he will never take Grayskull. Skell-Ra is the version of him that finally accepts help, and the price is that he stops being the one in charge.

One body, two villains

Skeletor is blue. Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living is close enough to blue that the same torso carries both without a repaint, so neither build reads as a compromise. Four swaps take you from one to the other.

Move across the image to swap the build. Four parts separate the two. Composite from Mattel product photography.

  • Head. A yellow Skeletor skull, or the Mumm-Ra headdress with its gold and purple crown, twin snakes and red tendrils.
  • Wings. One piece, reversible. Purple and black for Skeletor, red for Mumm-Ra.
  • Harness. Both carry the twin-snake emblem rather than Skeletor’s usual bones.
  • Skirt armour, plus a Mumm-Ra arm wrap.

The Sword of Plun-Darr, double-ended, stays with him either way. It is Mumm-Ra’s weapon, and handing it to Skeletor is the clearest signal in the whole package about who is actually running this partnership.

The detail that is not on the box

Skell-Ra is not on the standard Origins body. Collectors who have had one in hand report it uses the larger buck developed for the Turtles of Grayskull line, which makes him noticeably taller than an ordinary Origins figure.

If your shelf is a straight vintage-styled Origins run, he will break the line. Given that the entire premise is Skeletor stuffed with something that does not fit inside him, you can argue that is the point, but you should know before it arrives rather than after.

Price and availability

This is not a new reveal. Skell-Ra was announced in January 2025 and reached shelves in the middle of that year, in the crossover wave with Lion-O, Cheetara and Battle Cat-Man. What has changed is the price.

BigBadToyStore has him in stock at $27.99, down from $34.99, a 20 percent cut. The rest of the wave is discounted too, at $19.99 against a $24.99 list. Prices and stock on a year-old assortment move quickly, so check before you commit.

Where he sits in the archive

He already has an entry in the toy archive, filed under the Mattel collabs shelf alongside the rest of the crossovers.

For the ThunderCats read on the same figure, including what the Mumm-Ra card does to Third Earth continuity, our sister site has it: Mumm-Ra Found a New Body, and It Belongs to Skeletor.
