Mattel's flagship 1980s property turns 40. A look at why MOTU has never gone dormant in four decades and what is coming next.
Forty years on from the 1982 launch of the first Mattel He-Man action figure, Masters of the Universe is the rare 1980s property that has never spent more than a few years off the shelves. Mattel has rebooted the toy line continuously (Vintage 1982-1988, Classics 2008-2020, Origins 2019-present, Masterverse 2021-present, Masters Chronicles 2026, and the upcoming 2026-movie line). The cartoon has been rebooted three times since the Filmation original (MYP 2002, Revelation 2021, Revolution 2024). The mini-comics have been reprinted, expanded, and continued by multiple publishers (DC, Star/Marvel, Marvel UK, MV Creations, Dark Horse, Dynamite).
Why has MOTU outlasted nearly all of its 1980s peers? Three reasons usually cited: the simplicity and clarity of the original character designs, the open-ended fantasy-meets-sci-fi premise that gives every reboot room to redefine the tone, and a collector base that has stayed engaged across decades.
