MOTUFest opened this morning at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center, and the figure the show has been carrying since August is sitting on a table there. Last night, hours before the doors opened, Mondo put twenty seven product photographs of Disco Skeletor on his listing. Until then he had been a price and a paragraph, described in Mondo’s own copy and in ours, with nothing to look at beyond a prototype held up on a stream in August.
The armour is gold over a purple torso and black limbs, the hands and feet are a pale translucent blue, the chest harness is the bone and orb design in bright orange, and the skull under the hood is orange with a green wash across the crown. Mondo’s copy points at the paint rather than at the character, calling this “one of the most unforgettable Skeletor colorways” [1].
The listing still has no button on it! Where the add to cart would be, the page reads “This item has not been released for sale yet”, with a Notify Me control underneath, and the price sits above that at $110. Attendees can buy him on the floor today and tomorrow, a sale nobody at home can reach; everyone else waits until Tuesday 15 September at noon Eastern, when the window opens at MondoShop.
What the parts list says, and what the picture shows
Mondo counts four interchangeable portraits and names them: a neutral red-eye, a classic neutral, a classic worried and a classic raised eyebrow. But the layout photograph on the same page shows six skull heads beside two separate hood pieces, and two of those heads have their jaws open [2]. We are not going to settle that from a photograph, and both the list and the picture are Mondo’s.
The rest of the box is settled, though. Three pairs of hands, the Havoc Staff, a Double Blade Sword and a figure stand, moulded in PVC and ABS. Emiliano Santalucia has the concept design and shares the packaging art with Jordan Christianson, Tommy Hodges sculpted it and Hilary Arce painted it. Santalucia drew the Image Comics Masters of the Universe series in 2002, alongside the cartoon this line takes its look from.
Mondo has sold this colourway before, at 1/6 scale
Mondo has sold this colourway before. It released him as a 1/6 scale deluxe figure limited to a thousand pieces, listed at $235 and long gone from its own store, and that listing opened with “Inspired by the legendary repaint”. The 1/12 version is a smaller figure with a shorter accessory list, and it joins the two 200X figures Mondo already sells in that scale; the 1/6 release had no line around it. Anyone who passed on the big one gets a second look at a lower price.
The other 1/12 release this weekend went quickly. Ice Armor He-Man and Fire Armor Skeletor went up as one $225 set yesterday at noon, with a limit of two per order and an October ship window. That page now reads Sold Out with a Notify Me When Restocked control on it, a little over a day after it opened [3].
Mondo’s own store still lists the two base 200X figures, He-Man and Skeletor, at $95 each with the buttons live, while at BigBadToyStore both of those read sold out with a waitlist when we looked this afternoon, so the maker has stock the retailer does not. If you want the three of them standing together, the two base figures are the part of that you can still order today.
Disco Skeletor has had a price and no photographs since 22 August. As of last night he is a figure you can look at before you decide whether to be at MondoShop on Tuesday at noon.
[1] The slug on Mondo’s page reads powercon-exclusive rather than motufest. MOTUFest is run by Power-Con, so that is one show under two names. Mondo does not say what the word exclusive covers once the general sale opens on Tuesday, and the page carries no edition size.
[2] Six heads, two hoods, in one flat lay, against a parts list that names four. Counting hood and head as one assembled portrait does not close the gap either, because that still leaves six. Mondo has not explained it and we are not going to write an explanation into its parts list.
[3] Sold Out on a Mondo page can mean a sell through or a closed window, and Mondo does not distinguish the two. What is checkable is that the button was live yesterday and is not today.
