Mondo has been showing these two together since its San Diego Comic-Con case in July, and when it finally attached a date to them on 22 August the date was a weekend rather than a day. No price, no on sale time, no product page. All three arrived at noon Eastern today, a day before MOTUFest opens in the Greater Cincinnati area, and the shape of the release is not what the August wording implied. Ice Armor He-Man and Fire Armor Skeletor are not two figures going on sale beside each other. They are one 1/12 scale set, in one box, at $225, with a limit of two per order and an October ship window.
The accessory list splits along the same line the box does. He-Man brings Ice Fists, a Power Sword, a shield, a battle axe and a staff, plus interchangeable portraits, interchangeable hands and a faux fur cape; Skeletor answers with Fire Hands, a pair of Fire Blades, his own Power Sword and the Havoc Staff, with portraits and hands of his own [1]. The sculpted flame climbs Skeletor’s crown and shoulder guards in translucent orange, and the frost on He-Man’s fists, shield and helmet is cut in the same translucent plastic in pale blue, so the two figures are tooled against each other before you ever stand them up.
The packaging carries it through. The box opens into two hinged panels holding a single painted scene: a vintage style He-Man striding out of a snowfield under a pale moon on the left, a lava flow and a winged, burning Skeletor on the right, and the two figures standing on the shelf in front of the join. One picture, split by the hinge, with the product standing in the middle of it.
A note for anyone searching. Mondo calls the figure Ice Armor He-Man. The name in circulation through August was Ice Power He-Man and we used it too, so the product page is the first surface we can find carrying Mondo’s own wording [2].
Mondo lists Emiliano Santalucia, Mark Bristow, May Thamtarana and Tommy Hodges on this set. Santalucia drew Image Comics’ Masters of the Universe series in 2002, the comic that ran alongside the cartoon this line takes its look from [3].
What it costs, and what you can add to a cart today
The $225 buys both figures and there is no single figure option. The closest comparison is the two base 200X releases this set is built on, and at BigBadToyStore the 200X He-Man and the 200X Skeletor both read WAITLIST this afternoon, with no add to cart button on either.
What is in stock is Mattel’s own 200X Cartoon Collection, the Origins line that dresses the 2002 designs in vintage card art, and BBTS was listing two dozen of those this afternoon with the buttons live. The 200X He-Man is $19.79 against a $21.99 list and the 200X Skeletor is $21.99. Different scale and a different tier of the hobby, but the same two characters out of the same cartoon, and they ship now rather than in October.
Disco Skeletor is the one still to come
The other MOTUFest figure has a page up and a price on it and no way to order it yet. Where the button should be, Mondo’s page reads “This item has not been released for sale yet”. Disco Skeletor debuts at the convention this weekend and attendees can buy him on the floor, so there is one sale here that nobody at home can reach. Everyone else waits until Tuesday September 15 at noon Eastern, when the listing opens at MondoShop [4].
He is $110, and Mondo counts four interchangeable portraits, including a worried face and a raised eyebrow, three pairs of hands, the Havoc Staff and a Double Blade Sword. The credits shift on that one: Santalucia and Hodges again, Bristow and Thamtarana off, Hilary Arce on.
So the August calendar has resolved into two entries. The set is live now and ships in October, and Disco Skeletor opens on the 15th. If you have been following the 1/12 line through Clawful and Man-At-Arms, this is the weekend it gets expensive!
