The Masters of the Universe Origins Snake Lair is arriving with backers now, roughly three months ahead of schedule. Mattel Creations’ own product page still reads “Ships on or before 11-20-2026”, and boxes have been landing since the start of this week.

The first report came from Reddit user blarkleK, who posted on Monday that the set had turned up unannounced: “I’ve gotten some late shipment notifications from Mattel in the past and figured this was one of them. I was surprised when I opened it up!” They had ordered on August 1 of last year. Yesterday MENTALUNICORN11 posted photographs of an opened box to r/MastersOfTheUniverse, asking whether they were the first to receive one, and the thread drew a couple of hundred upvotes inside a day.

They were not alone for long. EducationFresh9167 reported a unit arriving the day before and described it as “very heavy, much more than expected”. blarkleK, the original poster, said a second was due in Colorado. Several other backers in the same threads said theirs had not moved yet, so this looks like the front of a shipping wave rather than a general release. Mattel has not posted a shipping announcement, and these are collector reports rather than a company statement, so treat the timing as the experience of the backers who have posted so far.

By last night MENTALUNICORN11 had it built, and posted a second set of photographs under the heading “Fully Assembled Outside”. That thread drew 132 upvotes inside ten hours. It is the first proper look at the set standing up outside its box, and worth saying plainly that it is not quite finished: asked for a shot of the back, they replied that this was the only picture taken because “I haven’t put all the stickers on or anything, I was honestly scrambling to get any of these pictures taken before I had to leave for work this morning”.

Built, it reads as two towers of very different character. The right-hand section is the face, a serpent maw over the main gate with the drawbridge on chains beneath it. The left is the working half, a coiled snake body climbing to a periscope head, with the barred cage, the harpoon blaster on its turntable and a fanged skull set into the rock at the base. EducationFresh9167, who had reported a unit arriving a day earlier, said it “fits in perfectly with the other sets” and singled out the colours.

That the set exists at all is the unusual part. The Snake Lair appeared in Classics Mini Comic #5, “He-Man vs. Skeletor! Their Final Battle!”, and was never made as a toy. Mattel put it to a vote, the community picked it as Eternia’s Choice, and it went to crowdfund in August 2025 needing 6,000 backers, with the deadline pushed to September 2 before it funded.

What backers are opening is a fortress of 28.46 by 16.04 by 29.30 inches, four levels across two sections, scaled to the Origins figures and to the earlier Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain sets. The Snake Staff unlocks a working drawbridge. There is a throne room for Lady Slither, a harpoon blaster that mounts around the lair, a telescoping snake head turret that pivots and fires, a working elevator, an extending periscope, a zipline, capture devices, an iron maiden, and a secret passage out of the snake-guarded hatchery. Chimera, Lady Slither’s two-headed steed, is in the box, along with a 24 by 18 inch holographic poster.

There is no second chance on this one. Mattel’s page is explicit that it “will only ever be available on Mattel Creations through this crowdfund”, so there is no retail listing and no preorder to point at. One commenter has already predicted the obvious consequence, that a run of secondary-market listings follows a shipping wave like this.

It caps a strong stretch for the line, which Mattel said in its Q2 earnings had more than tripled on the back of the film.
