Masters of the Universe finished its second domestic weekend at $8.8 million, according to Box Office Mojo figures cited by ComingSoon and SuperHeroHype. That is a 70.7 percent drop from the film’s $29.4 million opening, and it leaves the Travis Knight picture at No. 5 for the frame, behind Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, Obsession, Scary Movie and Backrooms.
The actuals come in below the $9.4 million weekend estimate reported a day earlier and steepen the projected drop from 68 percent to 70.7 percent. The film now stands at $46.7 million domestically and $86.1 million worldwide, with international takings of $39.4 million across all markets.
The math remains the headline. With a reported production budget of $170 million or more, outlets place the break-even point near $425 million, leaving the film more than $325 million short after two weekends. For comparison, ComingSoon notes Obsession has reached $188.4 million domestic and $286.5 million worldwide through its fifth weekend.
The calendar does not ease the pressure. Toy Story 5 and Supergirl arrive before the end of June, and July brings Minions and Monsters, the live-action Moana, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, all of which complicate audience retention. The film still carries a 68 percent critics score and an 88 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
