Masters of the Universe enters its second weekend projected to fall out of the domestic top three. Boxoffice Pro’s podium forecast for June 12-14 lists Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day at number one ($40M-$50M), Scary Movie at number two ($22M-$27M), and Focus Features’ Obsession at number three ($12M-$17M), with He-Man absent from the chart entirely.
The daily numbers explain why. Per The Numbers, the film took $1.9 million on Wednesday June 10, down 39 percent from discount Tuesday’s $3.2 million, bringing the domestic total to $36.6 million and the worldwide total to $61.3 million after six days against a $170 million production budget. Opening weekend accounts for just over 80 percent of the domestic gross so far.
The calendar gets harder from here. Disclosure Day is certified fresh at 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and targets the same over-35 audience that made up the bulk of He-Man’s opening crowd, and Toy Story 5 arrives June 19 with a projected $150M-$175M debut that is expected to absorb most family-audience screens.
Amazon MGM has pointed past the theatrical window, with distribution chief Kevin Wilson describing the opening as a first moment in a strategy “that will carry well beyond the theatrical window.” Outlets including Nerdist have argued the film’s positive word of mouth makes a fast Prime Video pivot the logical next move.
