The opening weekend numbers are in. Sunday studio estimates put Masters of the Universe at 29.3 million dollars in North America, slipping under the 30 to 31 million figures the trades carried on Saturday and landing the He-Man reboot at No. 2 behind Scary Movie’s franchise-record 55 million dollar debut.
The first international numbers arrived alongside the domestic settle. Per Deadline’s Sunday morning global report, the film added about 25 million dollars from more than 80 overseas territories, bringing the three-day worldwide total to 54.3 million. ScreenRant notes that is the best domestic debut in the franchise’s history, not adjusted for inflation, but it recoups only about a quarter of a production budget reported between 170 and 200 million dollars. With theaters keeping roughly half of ticket sales, ScreenRant pegs the breakeven benchmark near 425 million worldwide.
Analyst David A. Gross of FranchiseRe called it “a soft opening for an action adventure with franchise and series potential,” telling Variety that right now the only fantasy heroes doing strong business are the biggest established superheroes like Spider-Man, Deadpool, Wolverine, and Superman. Demographics tell part of the story: per ScreenRant, just 5 percent of opening-weekend viewers were under 12 and 6 percent were 13 to 17, the family segments that powered recent hits like The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Amazon MGM is staying on message. Domestic distribution chief Kevin Wilson said in a statement that Travis Knight and the cast “have delivered something truly special,” framing the opening as the first moment in a holistic distribution strategy meant to build engagement well beyond the theatrical window. Where the film goes from here depends on word of mouth: audiences have it at 87 to 88 percent on Rotten Tomatoes against a 66 percent critics score, and the second weekend will show whether that gap translates into staying power.
