Masters of the Universe is heading for a roughly 31 million dollar domestic opening weekend, according to Saturday trade estimates, landing at the bottom of the 30 to 40 million dollar range trackers had set for the film. Deadline pegs the He-Man reboot at 31 million dollars or more, with Variety reporting a similar figure.
The path there was soft from the start. After 4.4 million dollars in Thursday night previews, the Amazon MGM release took about 12.1 million dollars across all of Friday, then is projected to finish the three-day frame near 31 million. That is well below the weekend’s leader, Scary Movie, which trades report opening to a franchise-record 52 million dollars or more.
For a film whose budget has been reported north of 170 million dollars before marketing, the number lands as a disappointment. Reporting also has the film opening at number three in the United Kingdom, behind Backrooms and Obsession, pointing to a similarly muted international start through Sony Pictures International Releasing.
The result follows a split reception, with audiences scoring the film higher than critics in its first days of release. Whether word of mouth and the holdover audience lift the multiplier in the weeks ahead remains the open question for the new live-action He-Man.
