After a development road that stretched across nearly two decades, Masters of the Universe finally reaches theaters this week. Amazon MGM Studios opens the live-action He-Man film wide in the United States on June 5, with Thursday preview screenings beginning the evening of June 4 in key large-format and IMAX auditoriums.
Deadline reported on June 3 that the Travis Knight directed film opens at roughly 3,500 North American locations, with a projection near 30 million dollars domestic and 50 million dollars or more worldwide. The film heads into 86 international territories the same week, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, China, and Australia, with about 20 million dollars eyed from those markets. Deadline noted that He-Man is sharing premium large-format and IMAX space with the holdover of Disney’s “The Mandalorian and Grogu” and the new Paramount and Miramax comedy “Scary Movie.”
At the time of writing, Masters of the Universe sits at 74 percent on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer, which the site labels certified fresh. The film stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam and He-Man, Camila Mendes as Teela, Jared Leto as Skeletor, and Idris Elba as Duncan and Man-At-Arms, with Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Kristen Wiig, Charlotte Riley, and Johannes Haukur Johannesson rounding out the cast.
The release marks Mattel’s second theatrical feature after “Barbie,” and the studio is positioning the opening as a test of whether the 1980s toy and cartoon brand can draw both nostalgic adults and new family audiences. International distribution is handled by Sony Pictures International Releasing. Masters of the Universe opens June 5.
