Galitzine on his He-Man at the UK premiere: musclebound but with sensitivity and accessibility

Speaking on the Leicester Square carpet, Nicholas Galitzine framed the reboot's He-Man as a deliberate departure from past takes: still musclebound, but with a sensitivity and accessibility he says earlier versions did not have. Camila Mendes added that Teela's stubbornness and leadership carry over from the Filmation cartoon.

Nicholas Galitzine used his time on the Leicester Square red carpet on May 27 to position the reboot’s He-Man tonally against the 1983 Filmation series and the 1987 Cannon adaptation. Speaking to Press Association reporter Lauren Del Fabbro, Galitzine credited director Travis Knight with assembling “a team of people who were really very focused on creating fan service for the existing fans, but also making a movie that felt modern, that felt current.”

On the character itself, Galitzine drew a direct contrast with prior takes. “When it came to He-Man, we wanted to make a guy who obviously was still musclebound but had a sensitivity to him, had an accessibility to him that maybe we didn’t quite feel in the past,” he said. He framed landing the role as an “incredible honour” and his goal as building “a character who felt accessible, who felt current, who we could relate to in a lot of ways.”

Camila Mendes, on the same carpet, anchored her Teela to the Filmation original. “Teela is very stubborn and hot-headed and she’s a leader in the filmation cartoon and I feel like that definitely translates in the film as well,” Mendes said. She added that Teela “sees the goofiness of Prince Adam and really admires that and also wants a man like He-Man who is strong and courageous”, a setup for the film’s reveal that Adam is both.

For archival context: Knight has spoken elsewhere about drawing on the 130-episode 1983 Filmation series in scoping the film. The UK premiere ran Wednesday May 27 at Cineworld Leicester Square. Cast in attendance included Galitzine, Mendes, Idris Elba, Charlotte Riley and James Purefoy. UK release is June 3, US release June 5.
