Where to Watch Masters of the Universe (1987)
The Cannon Films original with Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella is one of the easiest cult films to watch for nothing: free with ads on The Roku Channel and the Prime Video free tier, included with Prime, and on MGM+ from August 13, 2026. And after thirty nine years it is finally getting a 4K release, with a longer Preview Cut nobody outside the studio has seen.

Streaming rights on a catalogue title like this rotate, and free tiers add and drop it every few months. The Prime Video and Roku Channel listings have been the steadiest homes, and the MGM+ window opening on August 13 gives it a paid home too.
How to watch it free
Three routes cost nothing. The Roku Channel carries it free with ad breaks, in a browser as well as on a Roku device. Prime Video runs it on the ad-supported free tier, so you can watch without a Prime membership. And Kanopy carries it free with a public library card, with no ads at all, which is the best-looking of the free options if your library participates.
If you already pay for Prime, the film is simply included: search Prime Video for the 1987 title and press play, no rental step.
MGM+, from August 13, 2026
MGM+ picked the 1987 film up for an August window, which lands neatly in the same summer as the 2026 reboot streaming on Prime Video. If you want the full double feature, the Cannon original on MGM+ and the Amazon MGM film on Prime Video will both be one search away from the middle of the month. MGM+ can be bought direct or added as a channel inside Prime Video.

Own it: the first 4K, and a cut nobody has seen
Toy Robot Video, a new label from the Arrow Video family distributed by MVD, makes Masters of the Universe one of its debut releases on September 15, 2026. The headline is not the resolution, it is the second disc: a newly unearthed Preview Cut with never before seen footage, extended scenes and alternate takes. For a film whose troubled production is half its legend, that is the closest thing to the version David Odell and Gary Goddard were reaching for.
| Format | Release | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| 4K Ultra HD, 2 discs | Toy Robot Video, September 15, 2026 | Theatrical cut plus the newly unearthed Preview Cut |
| Blu-ray, 2 discs | Toy Robot Video, September 15, 2026 | Same two cuts and extras, 1080p |
| DVD | Warner Bros., in print | The long-standing budget disc, theatrical cut only |

Frequently asked questions
Is Masters of the Universe (1987) streaming for free?
Yes. The 1987 Cannon film streams free with ads on The Roku Channel and on the ad-supported Prime Video tier, and it is free with a library card on Kanopy. It also streams at no extra cost for anyone with an Amazon Prime membership.
Is the 1987 Masters of the Universe movie on Netflix?
Not in the United States. The rights sit with Warner Bros. Discovery, so the film turns up on Prime Video, The Roku Channel, History Vault and, from August 13, 2026, MGM+ rather than Netflix. Netflix carries it in some other territories, and that can change month to month.
When does Masters of the Universe (1987) come to MGM+?
August 13, 2026. MGM+ picked the film up in the wake of the 2026 reboot, so you can watch the Dolph Lundgren original and the Nicholas Galitzine remake in the same month. MGM+ can be subscribed to directly or added as a channel through Prime Video.
Can I watch it on Prime Video?
Yes. Masters of the Universe (1987) is included with an Amazon Prime membership, and it also appears on the free ad-supported Prime Video tier. If you would rather own the digital copy, Amazon sells it outright for about 15 dollars.
Is there a 4K release of Masters of the Universe?
Yes, for the first time. Toy Robot Video, a new label distributed by MVD, releases a 2 disc 4K Ultra HD on September 15, 2026, with a matching 2 disc Blu-ray. It carries HDR, a stack of new interviews and two commentaries.
What is the Preview Cut?
It is a longer version of the film assembled from a preview print, with never before seen footage: new and extended scenes plus alternate takes. Disc one holds the theatrical version, disc two holds the Preview Cut. This is its first home video release in any format.
How long is Masters of the Universe (1987)?
The theatrical cut runs 106 minutes and is rated PG. The Preview Cut on the 2026 Toy Robot Video release runs longer, since it restores scenes cut before the film reached cinemas.
How much does the 4K cost?
List price is 54.95 dollars, with preorder discounting already bringing it below 40 dollars at some retailers. The standard Blu-ray edition costs less. Prices move during a preorder window, so check the current figure before you commit.
Can I rent it instead of subscribing?
Yes. Amazon Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home all rent the film for about 4 dollars, or sell the digital copy for about 15 dollars. That said, if you have Prime or a Roku, you can watch it for nothing right now.
Is the 1987 film connected to the 2026 movie?
No. The 2026 Amazon MGM film is a fresh adaptation with a new cast and no story link to the Cannon picture. They are two separate attempts at the same toy line, thirty nine years apart.
