Orko - The Tragic Comic-Relief

essay

Orko is the most dismissed major character in Filmation MOTU. He’s the comic relief, the magic-misfire gag, the children’s-show concession to a Saturday-morning audience. He’s also, on closer reading, one of the saddest figures in the franchise — a competent magic-user from another dimension whose every Eternian spell goes wrong because the rules of magic on Eternia are different from on Trolla. He saves the world repeatedly through luck and accident. He is mostly tolerated rather than respected by the Heroic Warriors he serves. The 200x MYP reboot’s ‘Orko’s Return’ gave him a substantive tragedy backstory — a Trollan disaster he tried to prevent and failed at — that recasts the whole running joke as a sustained character wound. The Revelation continuation preserves the recharacterization. Lou Scheimer’s 1983 Orko, Wally Wingert’s 200x Orko, and Griffin Burns’s Revelation Orko form a triptych of three different vocal interpretations of the same character: comedy, weight, and quiet sorrow.
