Eternia is, structurally, two genres stitched together. The medieval-fantasy half is King Randor, Castle Grayskull, Princess Teela, the magical Sorceress, the wizard Orko. The sci-fi half is laser-blaster-equipped Wind Raiders, mechanical Roboto, cybernetic Trap Jaw, cosmic-enforcer Zodac, the alien astronaut Queen Marlena. Filmation’s animators rendered both halves with the same visual language and no in-story explanation for why a sword-and-sorcery planet has laser tech. The blend defined the visual register of the 1980s licensed-cartoon era and became its own genre template — Saturday-morning shows of the period from BraveStarr to Visionaries took the Eternia-style fantasy-and-sci-fi blend as their starting point.
