The DC Mini-Comics ran 49 issues across 1982-1987 as pack-ins with Mattel MOTU action figures and playsets. The line is the canonical first MOTU narrative — pre-Filmation, pre-Adam-as-secret-identity, with a barbarian-fantasy register that diverged significantly from where the cartoon would take the franchise. Donald F. Glut wrote nearly all of them; Alfredo Alcala illustrated most of the early issues with a painterly approach that’s rarely been matched since.
