The short version: before Filmation locked the MOTU look in 1983, Alcala painted He-Man as a barbarian-fantasy hero in the Conan tradition. Castle Grayskull is a moss-eaten ruin, the Goddess wears Teela’s snake armor, and a map of the castle is drawn in blood.
