The 1985 She-Ra Princess of Power fashion doll is the line-opener for Mattel’s MOTU sister-property, designed to bring the She-Ra character (introduced in the Secret of the Sword animated film, theatrical release April 1985) into the toy aisle at fashion-doll scale rather than the existing MOTU 5.5-inch action figure scale.
The figure is 5.5 inches tall with full articulation at neck, shoulders, hips, and wrists. The body is a Mattel proprietary mould designed for the Princess of Power line, distinct from the Barbie body and from the MOTU action-figure body. Rooted hair (blond, shoulder-length) is the primary differentiator from MOTU figures, all of which had moulded hair. The face sculpt is the same Filmation-style She-Ra used in the cartoon, with painted eyes, eyebrows, and lips.
The costume is removable fabric. The Sword of Protection accessory is a separate moulded plastic piece with the central red gem. The boot wraps are part of the body sculpt. A separate Princess Adora pre-transformation outfit shipped with some early-release boxes, allowing the doll to swap between the Adora and She-Ra forms.
Box packaging is the distinctive Princess of Power pink. The window box shows She-Ra in costume, with painted backer art showing the Crystal Castle and Etheria landscape. The retail point of sale included a comic-book accessory: a small fold-out mini-comic story bound to the box card.
The line eventually expanded to 22 character figures across 1985 to 1986, with sub-line vehicles including Swift Wind, Stardust, the Crystal Castle playset, and the Crystal Falls playset. She-Ra herself shipped in multiple variants: standard, Starburst She-Ra (with light-up sword feature), and convention exclusives.
Secondary market pricing for the standard 1985 She-Ra figure: loose with all original accessories in C9 condition runs $30 to $60. Mint on card (MOC) examples with intact bubble and crisp card art run $150 to $300, with regional variants running higher. The Starburst variant runs about double the standard. The Crystal Castle playset, sold separately, runs $200 to $400 complete and $500 to $800 sealed-new.
