The Piece

Masters of the Universe Savage / Wonder Bread He-Man Prototype First Shot AFA 80 (Mattel, 1981). In the early stirrings of one of the most iconic toy lines of the 1980s, Masters of the Universe was still taking shape-its mythology unwritten, its heroes and villains emerging from the imaginations of Mattel's visionary designers. Among the rarest and most intriguing artifacts from this formative era is a prototype first shot He-Man figure, produced by Mattel in 1981 and verified to have originated from a former Mattel employee. This first shot figure features brown hair, brown fur trunks, and unpainted boots and belt, reflecting the rough-cut experimentation behind the scenes as the company refined what would soon become an action figure icon.

Bearing a Taiwan country of origin stamp that links it directly to Mattel's production pipeline, the figure aligns closely with the mysterious and legendary Savage He-Man, more famously-but inaccurately-known among fans as "Wonder Bread He-Man." Though long speculated to have been part of a promotional mail-away with Wonder Bread, no official documentation has ever confirmed the partnership. Instead, collector theories have pointed to a 1983 Mattel "Buy 3, Get 1 Free" offer as the likely source. The promotion, which required proofs of purchase submitted between January 1982 and June 1983, resulted in a figure arriving by mail that bore little resemblance to any retail release-a He-Man with brown hair, dark tan skin, no chest armor, and a random assortment of accessories.

Adding to the intrigue is a long-circulated theory that this figure originated from Mattel's early efforts to secure the Conan the Barbarian license. When the studio realized the film's mature content wasn't suitable for younger audiences, the agreement was dissolved. Mattel, however, allegedly repurposed the figure into the earliest version of He-Man, sparking a legal battle with Conan Properties in 1984. Although Mattel ultimately prevailed in court, the saga of Savage He-Man quietly ended soon after.

Encased in a deluxe acrylic display and graded Archival AFA 80 NM, this loose first shot figure is accompanied by an AFA Certificate of Authenticity, authenticated by industry expert Tom Derby. We believe this gem is not merely a figure; it is a true Savage He-Man prototype grail. It rises beyond the realm of prototype to stand as a powerful testament to the earliest bold visions that shaped Masters of the Universe, a living relic tied to one of the greatest and most enduring mysteries in the history of action figures.
